4 1/two stars. I worked really hard on studying and completing ALL 30 of the sessions including the vocabulary lessons. I learned so much. Even though the selections in the timed reading sections were very outdated, the techniques and skills outlined in the book were non. It was extremely useful and worthwhile. Now I just need to practice what I've learned!

Aye, it is lengthy, but it actually takes you step by stride, giving good guidance and excercises. And even though it was originally written in 1944 (I read the 1958 completly revised tertiary edition), information technology is far from antiquated. In fact, apart from the obviously dated selection of arti I must say this was, to me, an extremely useful book. Much more than anticipated. I thought I was a quick reader earlier, just thanks to the excercises in this book, I managed to increase my speed by some other 20% on average.
Yes, it is lengthy, but information technology really takes you step by step, giving good guidance and excercises. And even though it was originally written in 1944 (I read the 1958 completly revised 3rd edition), it is far from antiquated. In fact, apart from the obviously dated selection of manufactures for the reading excercises, the whole was adequately modern.
east.g. p 348 At the beginning of the section nearly reading critically, the author states that every author wants to convince the reader of his philosophy, attitude, POV. Even in fiction, a writer is a "special pleader." He continues:
"And, of course, it is almost impossible to selection upward a magazine or newspaper today without beingness bombarded past special pleading. As you turn the pages, most every author is proverb to you, directly or by implication, "This si what I think; or, This is how I feel; or, This is how I interpret a situation; or, These are the conclusions I draw from the (selected) facts; This is how I solve a problem; or, This is how to do the job; or, This is how I react to what has happened; or, This is how y'all should react; or, this is the furniture, vesture, perfume, cereal, book, lather, cigarette, auto, or liquor you should purchase, the transportation you should use, the play or move motion-picture show you should meet, the vacation yous should take, or the clemency you should contribute to"; and and so on and on, in countless, infinite multifariousness."
And this was written way before the social media historic period.
Yeah, the author uses lengthy sentences at times (and here it serves its purpose), but information technology is worth the try.
I besides appreciated the author´due south thoughts about why to read (both for furthering education, every bit well every bit entertainment), and in the chapter almost skipping and skimming (which in my stance is sacrilige), he made an appealing case, and argued that these techniques should be used sparsely, if at all.

For a book which is supposed to teach you how to find the meat of the comprehension and skim the rest, it surely does likes beating around the bush for mode too long, building up things with a pulsate beat and then repeating them once more and again after the chief thought is conveyed.
But then I think the writer may take deliberately chose to get down this path. He wants you lot to practise the techniques illustrated in the book with the book you lot are holding in your easily as a kickoff. Maybe he is conscio

Worth reading once. Only become fast and skim the better chunk of it. Movement forth when yous become the principal ideas.

Helped me in changing few of my learning habits and learned the mechanics of reading and efficient methods. I wouldn't have learned these things or unlearned few of my bad reading habits without this book. Leaving aside the fact that this book's help in improving reading speed - information technology helps you know the Good and Bad reading habits and practices. There is a considerable improvement in This book teaches you in a Very methodical mode to improve your reading speed and involves lots of practice sessions.

A must read for anyone who reads a lot and want to increase his speed to cover more bo Ane of the best books available in marketplace on speed reading,the exercises and assessments given in each chapters are very skilful to enhance your reading speed to a very practiced level,concepts given are based on psychological researches and the best office is that even the passages given for practices are the extracts from either dandy lectures or from some very good books which are also helpful for enhancing knowledge.
I tin non recommend information technology enough.This book has helped me rediscover how satisfying and pleasurable reading is.
I was never able to complete the book and always came back to do a couple of chapters to get the concept.
Develop a sense of urgency and push button yourself.
Actively seeking what the author is trying to tell y'all past looking at the title, headings, etc and skim the residue.
